Upgrading DNN Just Got Easier - Starting in DNN 10.2
Recently, the DNN Community team has implemented a range of excellent improvements in new platform releases and set a clear direction for future development, ensuring the long-term sustainability of our popular platform and the adoption of new technologies. Many new features haven’t received the attention they deserve, so we’d like to highlight one particularly major and important addition: upgrading DNN directly from the admin interface, available starting with version 10.2 under DNN Settings > System Info > Upgrades.
Upgrades used to be a serious challenge that often limited and slowed down both users and developers. For many users, the previous upgrade process was technically too demanding, which is why a large number stayed on older versions. Running outdated versions is a security risk, and it also creates extra work for module developers, who have to spend too much time on backward compatibility because many users don’t upgrade DNN regularly.
Thanks to the new in-app upgrade option, there’s no longer any need to manually unzip the DNN upgrade package and overwrite existing site files via FTP or a control panel File Manager. Now you simply upload the upgrade package in the new Upgrade interface and then start the upgrade process.
Of course, we recommend creating a backup of both the site and the database before upgrading. We also hope that a future release will include the option to run an automatic backup before an upgrade. This approach makes it easier than ever to stay up to date with the latest DNN versions—there’s no need to remain on older releases, because upgrading your DNN site is now simpler than ever.
So, upgrade to DNN 10.2.1 and make future DNN upgrades faster and easier.
Tutorial: How to Upgrade DNN 10.2+ via the Admin Interface
First, download the DNN upgrade package from the official DNN GitHub releases page:

Next, upload the upgrade package to your DNN site.
Follow the instructions.
Click the Settings gear icon, then select Servers from the menu.
Click the Upload Package button and select the DNN upgrade package you downloaded from GitHub.
Wait for the upload to complete.
After a successful upload, you’ll see details confirming whether the package is valid and whether an upgrade can be performed. Click the highlighted icon to start the upgrade.
Before proceeding, you’ll be asked to confirm that you have created a backup of the site. You can confirm this even if you haven’t, but you do so at your own risk.
Once confirmed, wait while the files are copied.
After the files have been copied successfully, confirm that you want to start the upgrade process.
The system upgrade screen will then open, where you’ll be prompted to enter the login details for a Super User account.
You’ll also see a security check to verify that everything related to the Telerik components is in order.
After a few minutes, the upgrade process will complete successfully.
And that’s it. Your DNN has been successfully upgraded.
